•The Norfolk, Virginia public school system (37,000-students) has won several national performance awards since it began its serious reform program in the late 1990s.

 

•The focus: world class standards, a multi-tiered and data-driven accountability system, and a laser-like focus on instruction and assessment and more.

 

•In many areas the gap has been cut by 50 percent or more, and by 75 percent in high school English and Algebra II.
